DOES ‘THE SCIENTIST’ HAVE THE RIGHT FORMULA FOR AUGUSTA?

November 11th, 2020

This week the golfing world, and for that matter most of the sporting world, is excited by the first ever Augusta Masters played in November rather than its traditional time in April.

Gone are the spectacular spring flowering azaleas, but instead the autumnal colours will prevail. The question is, will the man known as ‘The Scientist’ prevail at this wonderful event?

Bryson DeChambeau, nicknamed ‘The Scientist’ is, to say the least, unusual in the world of golf. At over 17 stone he is a powerhouse of a hitter. Allegedly consuming over 3500 calories a day, including 400 grams of protein, his bodybuilding programme enabled him to average drives of 322 yards in 2019. But this is no ‘Incredible Hulk’, lacking finesse, his 6-shot victory in the US Open at Winged Foot earlier this year was certainly due to his power hitting but you cannot win a major tournament with just power.

Apparently, he was a bit of a maths genius in his early years and has explored brain training and unusual breathing methods, and you can read about this fascinating guy in more detail in this article in Golf Digest. https://www.golfdigest.com/story/the-11-most-unusual-things-about-bryson-dechambeau

At present the odds vary on DeChambeau between 9/2 and 8/1 and it will be intriguing to see if he can better his previous attempts to win the Green Jacket, which were pretty underwhelming.

Some rain is forecast, and it’s expected to be a low scoring affair, but the field is, of course, packed with superstars including the FedEx Cup winner Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm storming up the rankings. Check out Rahm’s incredible hole in one at the 16th in practice yesterday, surely one of the greatest shots ever!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lzuoTarQjs
….and then there’s the added interest of Rory and Tiger!

In a week where science has excited the world with a likely vaccine for Covid19, could “The Scientist” hit the headlines in sport?
